There are two basic types of sump pumps: pedestal pumps and submersible pumps.

A pedestal pump is mounted above the sump area (it sticks up above the floor). Pedestal pumps are less expensive than submersible pumps. They are also easier to repair (because they are easily accessible). The downside is that they stick up above the floor.

A submersible pump is mounted inside the sump are (and is typically below the floor level). Submersible pumps are more expensive than pedestal pumps.
